sound sleep without snoring

What snoring remedies exist?

Basically, there are several ways to deal with snoring, also called rhonchopathy or UARS ("upper airway resistance syndrome"). Depending on the patient and his medical history, one has to decide whether a mere change of sleeping patterns would suffice to stop snoring, if an operation might be necessary or if treatment by medication is preferable. Since the sources of the snoring problem are varied and several factors can influence each other, an examination of the patient, his medical history, and a determination of effective remedies (in consultation with an ENT doctor) are the keys to successful handling.

In looking at remedies for snoring, one can therefore differentiate between behavioral, medicinal (or natural remedies), surgical and technical methods.

Snoring Remedy 1: Change sleeping habits & create a better situation physically

Changing one's sleeping habits has the distinct advantage that no medical assistance by an ENT doctor is necessary. Those changes may include a different sleeping position, abstaining from drinking alcohol at night, regular sleep times, minimizing allergens, or handling obesity. Methods that directly assist breathing do exist, such as a nose strip or 'snoring bandage', which specifically addresses the mechanical reasons for snoring. Oddly enough, even playing a wind instrument is supposed to help (especially the Australian didgeridu), due to a strengthening of tongue and palate muscles.

Snoring Remedy 2: Research homeopathic and medicinal therapies

While behavioral changes don't have any side effects, they are often not very effective. But before one decides to undergo a surgical procedure, one should visit a specialist or experienced homeopath. Even though there is not a wide range of medications available, nor a huge success rate, in some cases those remedies are being used successfully or at least supportively.

Snoring Remedy 3: Surgery - what kinds of operations / surgery methods exist?

First let it be said that most operations cannot be reversed - undergoing surgery should be carefully considered before proceding. Even with all the information now available on the web, one should definitely consult an ENT doctor and make the decision for or against surgery with your doctor's help. One promising plastic surgery option consists of tightening the mucous membranes of palate and throat, and removing the velum and tonsils. Despite it being a routine procedure, after-effects - such as problems swallowing - are not unheard of. This procedure can be done utilizing a laser, which is easier on the body. Another procedure, implanting plastic 'pins' into the soft palate, is successful in approximately one-tenth of all snorers.
