Anti-Snoring Therapies
What therapeutic steps can be taken against the sleep disorder called 'snoring' depends first and foremost upon the patient and his individual symptoms. For example, if someone suffers from sleep apnea, surgery would be far more indicated than for someone who has a light snoring disorder and hasn?t yet tried to handle it by changing sleeping habits.
Recommended treatments
Here are listed several evidently successful anti-snoring therapies:
- Injections for Snoring
By injecting specific medication into the soft palate at the back of the pharyngeal space, that area becomes scarred, which results in a strengthening and stabilization of the velum. This particular treatment resulted in full or partial success for a majority of patients. - High-frequency Therapy
This outpatient treatment is based on a similar principle as the snore-injection mentioned above - heat-creating frequencies cause an obliteration of the loose tissue and therefore a stabilization of the velum. - Teeth Bruxism Guard
This plastic guard was developed by the interdisciplinary cooperation of sleep specialists and dentists. Since snoring and the more serious sleep apnea are mostly caused by the pharynx tissue relaxing at night, this medical aid is supposed to keep the respiratory tracts clear. This prosthesis keeps the lower jaw and tongue forward during sleep, thereby making free breathing possible. - Other Oral Prosthesis
Aside from the teeth bruxism guard, there are many more devices available, which basically all follow the principle of keeping the lower jaw from falling backward while sleeping, holding it in place in order to ensure easy breathing. - TNI Air Stream Treatment
The treatment using nasal insufflation is based on the principle of assisting the snoring patien' own breathing. By using a so-called nasal mask, a flow of warm and humidified air is being blown into the person's nose while asleep. Please take into consideration that this gentle, minimally invasive treatment merely addresses the symptoms of snoring or sleep apnea. It does not result in a cure, i.e. the TNI has to be applied constantly.
